The time is here, that special spring fever that accompanies the launch of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. In the Eastern Conference, Ottawa eeked out the top spot, while Detroit easily commanded the Western Conference.

The competition for top spots was especially fierce in the East, with just one point separating many of the teams.

New Jersey pulled off a third place slot, despite having fewer points than fourth-place Buffalo. That's because New Jersey had the most points in its own conference, automatically garnering the third place position.

Toronto may have been the hottest team in the league in recent weeks, but it wasn't enough to dig out of their points pit and claw their way into the playoffs.

The standings in the East are:

  1. Ottawa Senators, with 113 points
  2. Carolina Hurricanes, 112
  3. New Jersey, 101
  4. Buffalo, 110
  5. Philadelphia 101
  6. NY Rangers, 100
  7. Montreal, 93
  8. Tampa Bay, 92

The standings in the West are:

  1. Detroit, 124

  2. Dallas, 112

  3. Calgary, 103

  4. Nashville, 106

  5. San Jose, 99

  6. Anaheim, 98

  7. Colorado, 95

  8. Edmonton, 95

The playoffs start on Friday, April 21, according to the NHL playoff television broadcast schedule.
