The NHL wants to see more scoring. Well, they just got their wish, but the Flyers might not be so enamored of "the New NHL." The team just got spanked in a 9-1 massacre.
Buffalo was firing on all cylinders tonight with seven different goal scorers hammering Philadelphia goaltender Robert Esche. The Sabres team combined for an amazing 25 points.
Thomas Vanek and Derek Roy each scored two goals for the Sabres tonight, and Maxim Afinogenov had a goal and 4 assists.
Mike Richards had an opportunity to get the first goal of the game for the Flyers when he was awarded a penalty shot 12 minutes into the first period, but Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller remained patient and in perfect position. Richards didn't even get a shot off.
While the first period remained scoreless, the Sabres started their goal scoring extravaganza 37 seconds into the second period when Thomas Vanek was able to score off his own rebound.
Once Robert Esche allowed that first goal, the flood gates opened. By the time the 2nd period ended, Tomas Vanek, Jaroslav Spacek, Chris Drury, Derek Roy, Henrik Tallinder and Maxim Afinogenov had scored goals for the Sabres.
The Philadelphia Flyers' only glimmer of hope tonight was Jeff Carter’s lone goal 1:22 into the 3rd period, booting Ryan Miller’s chances of a shutout.
Robert Esche was left in for the entire game. He faced 37 shots and received and assist on Carter’s goal. Jiri Novotny also scored for the Sabres.
The frenzied Buffalo crowd still wanted more, chanting, "We want ten!
