The Edmonton Oilers defeated the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim last night 2-1, and are now the Western Conference Champions. Their next stop is the NHL Stanley Cup Finals.
Whyte Avenue was very busy last night. Fires were set ablaze and arrests were made. That's right, the Oilers are going to the NHL Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1990.
After several grueling weeks of playoff hockey and a flu bug that was taking them hostage, the Edmongton Oilers will get a much deserved rest while they wait to see who they will play in the Stanley Cup Finals.
The Oilers took hold of the series when they won the first three games in the best of seven series, but lost the fourth game in front of the home town fans who were hoping for a sweep.
The Oilers were out shot every game by the Ducks and outplayed a lot during the series, but great goaltending by Dwayne Roloson, goal scoring from anyone on the team on any given night, and the Oilers' willingness to sacrifice themselves to block shots were all key ingredients to this team's success.
The Oilers, who just barely made it into the playoffs and had to go through tough teams like the Detroit Red Wings and San Jose Sharks, have become the NHL's Cinderella team. Now they have critics who once thought they were a fluke seeing the talent and heart this team has.
Still, not everyone is impressed with this team. "I don't think the better team beat us. We beat ourselves," said Teemu Selanne, according to NHL.com.
