NHL Off-Season Buzzing with Activity

The NHL offseason has been anything but off, with a flurry of players being traded, signed and inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Here's a roundup of the action

Since the NHL's draft, there have been numerous signings this past week. The unrestricted free agency starts July 1.

Patrick Roy is headed to the "The Hall." Herb Brooks, who led the 1980 Miracle on Ice winning Olympic hockey team, Dick Duff and Harley Hotchkiss will also be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in November.

The Boston Bruins signed Dave Lewis as the new head coach. They fired Mike Sullivan on June 27th.

The Dallas Stars bought out the remaining portion of Bill Guerin's contract on Thursday.

The Stars will pay him $4.5 million instead of the $6.7 million he would have received if he stayed with the team.

Bryan McCabe finally signed a contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday. The deal will give McCabe $28.75 million (US) over five years. This is the same deal that both parties agreed upon a month ago.

The Leafs also signed restricted free agent John Pohl to a two year deal.

The St. Louis Blues signed center Ryan Johnson and defenseman Matt Walker.

The Montreal Canadiens signed goaltender Christobal Huet to a two year, $5.75 million (US) deal on June 26th. The Canadiens also signed forward Jonathon Ferland.

Wade Redden is staying put in Ottawa after he signed a two year contract worth $13 million (US).

Also staying put is defenseman Jon Klemm. The Dallas Stars opted to excerise the $950,000 that was in his contract. Dallas also signed winger Mathias Tjarnqvist.

Defenseman Nick Boynton is probably looking for a nice place to hang his helmet in Phoenix after he just signed a 3 year contract. This is just days after the Coyotes acquired him from Boston for defenseman Paul Mara.

The Colorado Avalanche picked up the option on forward Antti Laaksonen's contract and signed defenseman Ossi Vaananen to a one year contract.

The Carolina Hurricanes re-signed defenseman Frantisek Kaberle to an $8.8 million, four year deal. They also re-signed head coach Peter Laviolette to a five year deal. Raleigh's News & Observer reported that deal is worth at least $1 million annually.

The Chicago Blackhawks bought out the contracts of forwards Curtis Brown and Matthew Barnaby. They were both going to earn $1.33 million during the 2006-2007 season.

A few other goings on in the NHL this week include:

  • Chris Pronger wants out of Edmonton, despite a recent run to the Stanley Cup finals. Pronger has officially asked Oilers GM Kevin Lowe to trade him due to personal reasons. Pronger still has four years left on his contract that would pay him $6.25 a season.

  • Buffalo Sabres goaltender Martin Biron also hopes to be traded this summer. Biron's agent, Gilles Lupien, recommended Biron sign the $2.1 million contract offer Buffalo has offered him because it may make a trade easier.

  • Ottawa wasn't impressed with center Tyler Arnason's play since they got him from Chicago, so the Senators decided not to make a contract qualifying offer before Monday's deadline. Arnason will be an unrestricted free agent July 1st.

  • Steve Yzerman is still pondering his future in the NHL. The captain of the Detroit Red Wings told the Detroit Free Press that when free agency starts July 1st, that would be a good time to tell the Detroit Red Wings what he was going to do one way or another.

  • Jeremy Roenick was so embarrassed by his play last season, he's hitting the gym so he can get into "the best shape possible that my body can get to," according to NHL.com. Roenick, 36, isn't looking for any big deals, he added. "It's not going to take much to sign me," he said. Roenick is after a deal for less money and some bonuses. He also wants to play for a Canadian team next season.

  • Gary Roberts wants to go back to Toronto. Gary Roberts has asked the Florida Panthers to trade him back to the Toronto Maple Leafs so he can be closer to his daughter who attends a boarding school in Toronto.

  • Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, and Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino joining forces with the Murstein group hoping they will be the ones buying the Pittsburg Penguins and that they plan on keeping the team in Pittsburg. The NHL is reporting that the Penguins are expected to be sold before the start of the 2006-2007 season.
